My container was stopped by SARS. What happens now?

It depends on the stop. A documentary inspection asks for supporting documents and may end in release or lead to a physical inspection. For a physical inspection, SARS opens a case and flags the cargo (CUSRES code 2); the inspection is then booked with SARS. We move the container in bond to our licensed depot, prepare it for the inspector, repack it after, and report to you every day until it’s released.

Where is the examination done?

At our SARS-licensed customs depot at 69–71 Barlow Road, Jupiter, Germiston, about 5 km from the City Deep inland terminal, or at a depot you nominate. SARS accredited the depot in 2015.

Can you bring the container from City Deep or Durban?

Yes. We hold the customs and excise licences of an approved remover of goods in bond, with a road bond guarantee lodged with customs, so we can move customs-stopped containers to our depot, or one you nominate, for examination.

Which examinations do you handle?

Tailboard, tunnel and full unpack inspections, for stop and detain, anti-smuggling and border police, plant inspections, DA 65, examinations without prejudice (EWP), MIDP, Carnet and port health.

Who books the inspection with SARS?

The client books the physical inspection at the dedicated email address SARS provides, usually through the clearing agent, and gets electronic confirmation. We work to that booking: the container is moved, unpacked and ready when the inspector arrives.

Can I attend the examination?

Yes. You or your representative may attend, as long as the inspection isn’t impeded. Packages can also be opened in your absence, at your risk and expense, if SARS can’t reach you.

How will I know what’s happening?

We send you a status report every day until the final release, so you and your clearing agent always know where the container stands.

Who pays for the examination?

The Customs and Excise Act puts the expenses of examination on the importer or owner of the goods. Inspections that SARS itself selects carry no extra SARS attendance charge. Our part, moving, unpacking and repacking, is quoted up front, and we consolidate examinations to keep it competitive.

What if SARS disputes the value or the tariff?

SARS may ask for a provisional payment as security for possible extra duties and taxes while the dispute is settled, and release the goods against it. Your clearing agent handles that with SARS; we can hold the container at our depot in the meantime, overstays included.

How much does it cost?

Every container is different, so we don’t publish prices. Answer the seven short questions in the quote form, add the stop check if you like, and our team calls you with a price.
